PUBLIC SERVICE ASSOCIATION.

CANTERBURY ERANCH

A meeting of the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Public Service Association was held last evening, and was attended by Messrs Cordery (chairman), Fair, Morrison, Maloney, Moon, Rose, Oulds, Jlelberd, Murray, Webb, Seator, and Russell. The financial statement disclosed a credit balance of £32 10/7. t It wa's reported that replies to circulars regarding organisation had been received from Burnham, Ilanmer, and Otira, and Messrs Anderson, O'Connell, and Edwards had been appointed agents at\the respective places. Disagreement was expressed with the views of the deputations which had advocated to the Commissioner th'e abolition of Saints' days'for an equivalent added to the annual leave, it being considered that the matter was of such importance that the opinion of branch officers should be obtained before any definite steps were taken. The case of a female appellant was referred to the Dominion president for his legal opinion, and it was decided to give the appellant assistance in conducting her case before the board. The committee reported that it would be necessary to apply to the Supreme Court for a declaratory judgment in connection with the matter, as on several previous occasions difficulties had arisen in connection with appeals. Other opinions of the Solicitor-General were contested and action had 'to be t taken in order that the Appeal Board should decide if an appeal were valid. As these cases would entail extra expense, it had been deemed necessary to raise the subscription and'"also make a special levy.
