EILESMERE.
Messrs H. Matson mid Co. held their tenth annual horse fair at Leeston 011 Monday, in fine weather. There was an entry of about 130 horses, about 100 being broken and' the remainder u-n----broken animals. Practically everything in the line of draughts was sold at very satisfactory prices, those that did not change hands had had reserves placed upon them which were evidently above current values. There was no great demand for light horses. The sale must be considered the most successful yet held by this firm at Leeston. The total value of the horses sold reached nearly £ISOO. Most of the leading breeders of the district sent one or more horses. The most noticable feature of the sale was the great demand for good, strong, young draughts, which brought prices that must have been very satisfactory to the vendors. The annual meeting of the Ellesmere Public Library was held in the Doyleston Hall on Saturday evening, Mr S. J. Irwin presiding over a large attendance of subscribers. The annual report and balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £4 17/-, was adopted. Officers for
the ensuing year were elected as follow: —Patron, Hon. R. H. Rhodes; president, Mr J. Rennie, sen.; vice-presidents, Messrs Amos, Amor, Cooke, E. P. Coe, Blackmore, Doyle, G. Osborne, Jas. Rennie, and Hi Toner; committee, Mrs Knight, Misses Cavill, Rennie, Rollo, Messrs Amos, Blackmore, and Irwin;. secretary, treasurer/ and librarian, Miss' Mary M'Lachlin; auditor, Mr John Pussell. A donation was voted to the secretary for her services during the past year, 3 and the purchase of new books was left in her hands. . The residents of Kiliinchy held their annual harvest home social in the Killmchy Hall on Friday evening, when thfere was a good attendance of dancers from all parts of the district. The hall was nicely decorated for the occasionjp and everything was .done by the coni-' nuttee to make this annual event as enjoyable as possible/' Mr C. T. O'Brien" carried out the duties of secretary with satisfaction to all. The - threshing season is practically finished in the Ellesmere district. Most of the machines (there are about twelve' threshing this season) have pulled in: those that are still out are pea andclover shelters. The~ season has been a most successful one for farmers, who* should reap "good"harvests/' from their labours. On Friday afternoon and evening tht Ladies' Guild of 'the' Brookside Motho-' (list Church held a successful sale oi work in the schoolroom. The ladies ' had prepared a great deal of plain and: fancy work, and other goods seen at such functions, and as a reward' f*s their labours a big trade was done. Theproduce section was very strong and helped materially in swelling the finances. Several competitions held in the evening, which provided a great deal of - amusement; the sale of work was a great success, ■, both financially and socially. _A meeting of the executive of the Ellesmere No-License League was held at Southbridge on Monday afternoon, when important business in connection with the forthcoming campaign and the general election was discussed. It was decided, on the motion of the Rev. It. W. Jackson, to place on record the valuable services rendered to the cause by the Rev. T. A. Joughin, who is shortly leaving the district to take up church work in Timaru.
