RAMES FROM EXPLOSION DEBRIS HURLED SKYWARDS. CHEMICAL WORKS WIPED OUT. WORKMEN'S HURRIED ESCAPE. "Times" and "Sydney Sun" Services. LONDON, March 30. The explosion of a tank containing benzine at Hardinan and Holden's chemical works, Manchester, resulted in the destruction of seven acres of works. Two hundred police kept the crowds back. There were many explosions of creosote, naphthaline, and sulphuric, acid. The flames shot 100 ft high, and debris was hurled skywards. • The funies made it most difficult for the firemen to carry oiyfc their work. Tons of sulphuric acid were turned into the street sewers for safety. The damage amounts to many thousands of pounds. Fifty workmen escaped through windows.
