It is a reflection on a certain careless element of the' Christchurch residents that the City Council should at this stage be forced to hurry along the appointment of a caretaker for Deans's Bush, and to arrange for police protection and supervision. Already vandals have been at work disfiguring the trees and causing destruction in the bush, and with such hapless individuals about the precautions above mentioned appear to be very necessary. It would afford an excellent warning if one or two of these people could be haled before the Court and fined. The ' Mayor was naturally indignant at the wantonness of the unprivileged visitors, who were probably unaware that they were trespassing. Care was taken when the gift was publicly notified to point out to Christchurch at large that Deans's Bush was a patch of native forest, a reserve which should be a thing of beauty and a joy for ever, a reserve in which the citizens could take a proper pride. And here, before the governing board is legally constituted, a number of wilful residents have gone out of their way to maim and destroy the trees. It is a fiagraut instance of the disregard some thoughtless people possess for public property, and if the offenders can be apprehended, they should not go unpunished#
