PERSONAL.

Mr J. Vigor Brown, M.P. for Napier, arrived from Wellington on Sunday. The Hon. E. C. J. Stevens, M.L.C., returned from Wellington on Saturday. Lord Rochdale left for Wellington oh Saturday night. Mr Harold Biggs has been appointed secretary of the Christchurch Musical Society.

Mr S. E. Rutherford, of Cass, arrived in Christchurch last night, and is staying at the United Service Hotel. Captain M'Dougall, Marine Superintendent for the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company, arrived from Wellington on Saturday.

Among the guests at Coker's Hotel who arrived yesterday are Messrs G. R. Hercus (Wellington) and W. J. Morrison (Hanmer). Cable news from Sydney, says a Press Association wire, reports the death of Mr D. J. Napier, a well-known property owner of Dunedin. Miss Ethel Moore, hon. secretary of the New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Association, leaves for England next Friday. Mr Handel Thorley, who takes up the position of conductor at the Roman Catholic Cathedral in place of Mr A. Bunz, who has resigned, assumed his duties yesterday. Mr J. L. Davis, who has been in charge of the wireless station at Chatham Island, and Mrs Davis returned yesterday. Mr Davis has been transferred to Bluff.

Mr C. S. Louis, who for the past five years has been in the Land Department of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-opera-tive Association, has resigned his position to take charge of Messrs M'Kenzie and Willis's land department.

Mr and Mrs G. R. Beamish, of Hawke's Bay, Mr- W. J. Pugh, of Auckland, and Mr S. L. Ludbrook, of Oheawai, arrived in Christchurch yesterday, and are staying at Warner's Hotel.

Sir Joseph Ward will pay a visit to Picton and Blenheim on Tuesday, speaking at the latter place on Wednesday. He will then go on to Nelson, where he will deliver a political address on Thursday or Friday.. Colonel Richardson, Offiter- Commanding the 13th (North Canterbury and Westland) Regiment, has been on the West Coast for the past three weeks, inspecting units. He is expected to return to Christchurch towards the end of the week.

Mr Ledger, chief clerk, of. the union Steam Ship Company's local office, has geen granted leave of absence for six months. In the meantime his position will be filled by Mr G. H, M'Kenzie, lately in charge of the Westport office, and iwho has recently been acting as sub-manager at Lyttelton. Among the passengers for Wellington by the Saturday night ferry steamer were Messrs J. H. Lord, T. J. Pemberton, C. B. Wacher, J'. P. Maxwell, J. A. Ogle, W. M'Kenzie, F. W. W. Williams, H. G. Ell, M.P., and Dr Simson.

Arrivals from Wellington by yesterday 's ferry steamer include the Hon. W. P. Thellusson, Dr Bernan, H; Jacoby (London), C. G. Poole (Detroit), E. B. Chudleigh (Auckland), and E. Porter (Sydney). The headmaster of Heathcote School, Mr W. A. Stout, was entertained by pupils and residents on Friday,-and received several presentations in recognition of the thirteen years' service he has given in the school. Mr Stout is leaving to take charge of the Cashmere Hills School.

The General Manager of Railways, Mr E. H. Hiley, has been discovered to be a hockey enthusiast, and a one time international player for England, so, at a meeting of the Wellington Hockey Association, held on Friday night, he was elected a vice-president of the association.

At the spring exhibition of the Royal Society of British Artists, of which Mr Frank Brangwyn, R.A., is the newlyelected president, now being held at the society's galleries in London, Mr H. Linley Richardson, R.8.A., of Wellington Technical College, is exhibiting a number of paintings and drawings of children and Maori Subjects. The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, chairman of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, has tendered his resignation as a member of that body. The resignation was accepted with regret, and the secretary was instructed to write to Mr Fisher, expressing the committee's appreciation of the services he has rendered the association for many years past. On Thursday afternoon the members of the Leeston Methodist Ladies' Guild entertained Mrs Joughin, wife of the Rev. T. A. Joughin, who is shortly leaving for Tima.ru, at a garden party at "Deep Spring," the residence of Mr J. Barnett. On behalf 'of the Ladies' Guild, Mrs J. Barnett presented Mrs Joughin with a very fine eiderdown quilt, as an expression of the high esteem in which she was held by the members of the guild. Best wishes were expressed for the future happiness of the departing guest. Mrs Joughin made a suitable reply. K Afternoon tea was served, and a very pleasant afternoon was spent.
