LETTERS TO THE EDITOR.

CITY AND SUBURBAN CRICKET. To the Editor of THE SUN. Sir, —In reply to your correspondent, '' ex-Rep.'', I must say that lam surprised at any inan signing himself thus knowing no better than to rush into print over remarks that he has heard from batsmen after they have been given out: If he has had the experience he says he has, he would know that a batsman is never out in his own mind unless the three stumps are down. He quotes the case.of a man being given out when his bat was in 18 inches, but he omits to state that the man had not grounded his bat. Again,, he gives the Case of a man treading on his wicket, v and states that the umpire'gave him out on a different matter altogether. The fact is the umpire's decision was out on account of. dislodging the bails while playing the ball. He ("ex-Rep.") also states that the umpires were either ignorant or biased. I should ask him if he is showing any shadow of fairplay in criticising two decisions that were against the Hornby team, and meanwhile saying nothing about the way. the Hornby sympathisers made every effort to put a Sydenham man off his catch «n the occasion of Hornby's last wicket. However, if he is the fairminded man hjjgisays, he will attend the next association meeting a*t the Y.M.C.A., on April 2, at 8 p.m.—l am, etc., • * '■"■'" '' - ■ SECRETARY ofthe' City and Suburban Cricket Association. DISCOURAGED OEGANIST. To' the Editor*bf THE Sljifr ~ Sir,—Cr Hunter appears to be very concerned because New Zealand artists have not been getting their due, and in interviews with local Press represen-tatives-has criticised the Art Society for purchasing with the City Council's grant a picture not painted by a New Zealand artist. Now, Sir, .this appears to me to be a case in which charity begins at home, and I should like to ask the City Council, through Cr Hunter, when the last municipal organ recital /was given by .a New Zealand re* .citayet, and whether any New Zea* lander has ever been given, an opportunity of demonstrating his capabilities as a public performer on the city organ, purchased by the New Zealand Government for New Zealand citizens*

I discussed this . matter personally with the members of the Bands and Organ Committee some two years ago> and was ajsured that the instrument would be made available for praetice by local qualified organists, but so far the matter has never been before the Council, to my knowledge. There are at least six qualified Organists in this town to whom the city organ is a rocked instrument. Personally speaking, 1 have not the slightest objection to the city organist drawing his large ■tfour guineas a week, I belie one naturally wonders how the Cathedral authorities the business proclivities of their orgaaist with their teaching of '' no of work'' on the Sabbath, but at th"e same time I would suggest that if the City Council is really desirous of fostering local talent, it might with advantage make a siart'by granting its patronage to a series of municipal organ recitals given by New Zealand recitalists. —I am, etc., DIPLOMATE ORGANIST-
