BIG BLOCK DESTROYED. BANK'S NARROW ESCAPE. ' I'"-' SHOPS AND HALL GUTTED. STRENUOUS WORK BY BRIGADE. Press Association. WANGANUI, March .18. A block of buildings at Waver ley, known as "Dixon's," was destroyed by fire at three o'clock this morning. The blaze originated in Moore and Fitzsimmons's barbers' salopu and Spread to the premises of Dalton, land agent, "Eames, chemist, Merriman, -jeweller, and Dixon's Hall. The block and its contents were destroyed..' r Cathie's stationery premises were and much damaged, but the brigade* arrested the' progress of the fire, though not before the stock was practically ruined. The Bank of New South Wales was only saved after strenuous efforts. The insurances ' on the buildings amount to £1950 and on the stock £I4OO.
