EDUCATION BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the North Canterbury Education Board, held this morning- was attended by Messrs T. W. Adams' (in the chair), t). H. Opie, J. Jamieson, G. Rennie, H. Boyd, E. H. Andrews, and W. H. Collins. The inspectors submitted a list of books they recommended the board to place on its approved list, the department to be asked to allow the books already authorised to remain in use for the time being. It was pointed out in the report that no provision was made for supplying books to teachers, who are allowed a perfectly free hand as regards the educational works for reference. With regard to a list of books suitable for school libraries, the inspectors had no recommendation to make, the practice being for teachers to furnish lists for approval before purchase is authorised.

• The Buildings Committee reported that it had received from Messrs Andrews and Opie a report recommending that an urgent application be made for a grant for the erection of a new school at Breeze's Road, there being at present 62 pupils in attendance for whom the accommodation is altogether inadequate and unsuitable. It was agreed to make application accordingly, and to' ask the department to approve of a temporary building being erected in the meantime. A letter was received from the School Committees' Association, expressing a wish for their" executive to meet ths board's committee and discuss the important question of the heating of schools. It was agreed to meet the representatives of the association on the evening previous to the next meeting of the Buildings Committee. A letter was received from the Horsley Downs Committee reminding the board of its promise to form a school district. It was regretted that to some extent the matter had been overlooked after the board had dealt with the proposal to movd the school to a more central' position nearer Hawarflen. As the? boundaries traced on the map submitted ■by--the committee could not be followed <lls-the. maps in possession of the board, it": iras agreed to submit a lithograph and ask the committee to have the boundaries they proposed marked on it. The residents of Lyndon No. 2 Settlement renewed their application for a school, and submitted particulars showing where the 13 children of school age lived. It was agreed to make application to the department for the necessary grant, on the settlers guaranteeing to provide half-cost, which would be refunded to them on an average of 10 being maintained for 12 months. The Mount Somers School Committee wrote, drawing attention to the need of a new school or the enlargement of the present building. It was represented, to the committee that the aver: age attendance being 46, and there being at present accommodation for 55 children, there were other cases much more urgent. A letter was-received from the New Brighton Committee covering a map showing the boundaries which, had been agreed upon by the New Brighton and Breeze's Road 'Committees. Consideration of the matter was deferred pending receipt of communication from Breeze's Road.

It was agreed that when the new school at Bligh 's! Road, Papanui, is ready, a relieving , teacher shall be placed in charge until the attendance shall be known, when the necessary teachers will be advertised for.

A report was received from the Chief Inspector, stating that classes for pupilteachers and probationers in zoology and elementary hygiene coulff be arranged for on similar lines to last year's classes. Mr Brock further reported that in the case of uncertificated teachers residing at a distance from Christchurch, arrangements could be made for tuition by correspondence, and that he hoped to be able to arrange a winter school in order that the practical work might be taken. The recommendations were approved, the hygiene and zoology classes to be advertised, and uncertificated teachers informed by circular of the arrangement made on their behalf. 'A letter was received from the Department, intimating that thp Minister had approved of the extension for one year of the Junior National Scholarships held by Harriet N. Porter, Gertrude Boyd, and Gwendoline Hooper. The following arrangements as regards technical instructors at Christchurch were approved:—Miss B. The director tif the Christchurch Technical College > reported that very few teachers had ; joined the cookery class. It was agreed that the class should be continued until the end of the present term,'in the hope that more teachers would avail themselves' of the opportunity of receiving instruction. The instructor reported that of the 13 teachers who had attended the summer class in agriculture,' 12 had been successful in obtaining certificates. -A letter was received from the secretary of the Lyttejton Technical Classes Committee, regretting that nothing had been done to establish technical classes this year, although he hoped that a movement would be made in the near future.
