SEAMEN'S INSTITUTE.

ANNUAL MEETING. Prior to the seeond annual meeting of the King George V. Lyttelton Seamen's Institute, held at Lyttelton last night, the president, Capt. J. A. H. Mareiel, J.P., provided a sumptuous repast for invited guests. There were about a hundred present, and all had an enjoyable time. The Rev. J. J. Bates opened the meeting with a prayer, which was followed by a well-chosen hymn. * The secretary, Mr R. S. Badger, read the annual report, which adopted without discussion,. Captain Mareiel, in his address, laid stress on the lamentable loss of the late Mr Geo. Laurenson, and also of the deaths of the late Lord and Lady Strathcona.* The speaker pointed out that the last £IOO received from the late Lord Strathcona, who used, to head the movement for- seamen's comfort at Home, w,as sufficient to clear the Lyttelton Institute from- debt. Captain Mareiel' further mentioned the good the institute was doing for those who employ labour on the waterfront. The counter attractions were great, but the .majority preferred the institute to them. Mrs Townend, who has been especially generous as a donor, was also thanked in the president's address amidst great applause. In conclusion Captain Mareiel stated that at the present time the institute was out of debt. To reach that condition they had had the services of Mrs Blunt and her assistants, and the superintendent (Mr Booth), who had worked with superhuman efforts to achieve such satisfactory results. Short addresses were given by Bishop Julius, the Rev. Dr Erwin, Mr J. R. •Webb (Mayor of Lyttelton), Mr R. A. Dearsley (hon. organising secretary for the British and Foreign Sailors' Society for New Zealand). An apology was received from the Rev. S.
