AUCKLAND UNEMPLOYED.
Press Association. AUCKLAND, March 17. Those unskilled labourers in Auckland, who are on the unemployed list, seem to have no great number of opportunities for securing relief on public works at the present moment. A few days ago the Mayor telegraphed to the Prime Minister, asking if work could be provided on the railway works in the neighbourhood of Auckland for some of the unemployed of the city, and received a reply indicating that work might be found for a proportion of them. Enquiry yesterday showed that so far no relief had been accorded by the Railway Department in this district. The Labour Department states that the unskilled labour market in Auckland is unsatisfactory as far as placing men in the city is concerned. Callers seeking work have been numerous, most of them being single men, who are disinclined to leave the city, preferring to remain in the hope that some suitable employment will turn up, but there is no work offering.
