A NEW UNION.
THE JEWELLERS' AWARD. Press Association. WELLINGTON. March 13. An award was made in the Arbitration Court in the Wellington jewellers' dispute to-day in the terms of the agreement arrived at between the parties before the Conciliation Commissioner, and is the first to be made in the trade in the Dominion. It grants a 465-hour week in place of 45 hours and 47$ hours, worked in different establishments at present, and fixes the minimum wage for .journeymen at' £3 •a' week,' superseding the various existing rates, except where these are in excess, in which cases the latter are to remain. Various conditions are fixed; notably with relation to the employment of. apprentices, and preference was granted the unionists. The award operates fqr two years. Working jewellers' unions have also, been, or* are being, formed in Dunedin, Auckland, and Christchurch, and are presenting demands.
