The training ship Welle,sley, reported yesterday to be on fire, one of England's wooden walls, was formerly the Boscawen. She was launched iii .1844. Three hundred boys in the'sehoolroom learned of the danger through the firebell summoning vessels in the river for help, and quickly left the class-rooms. The elder boys manned the- pumps, and the younger w,ere marshalled on the upper deck ready to lower the boats. Smoke was penetrating the decks. Some, lads had to face suffocating smoke. They were' reluctant to leave the pumps, but the officers them to do so. There were numerous pluplfy-inci-dents. A boy ran to the captain's quarters, picked up a baby, and carried- it up on deck. Four boys in the carpenter's shop were imprisoned, but rescuers cut a hole in the woodwork and the boys crawled out.. The ship burned to the water's edge and sank.
