The weather was wintry throughout Canterbury at 9 o'clock morning; but after a wet and stormy night- tlie . skies had cleared generally. The ranges ha,d received a coating of snow as a result of the cold, snap. Timaru reported that a heavy : gdiitli-west gale had occurred during the night,- .which still ; continued this morning, but was moderating then. A fresh south-east wind prevailed at the Bealey. Hanmer was the only station to report calm weather. A boisterous southerly gale raged" in ■ the city during the small hours of the morning, bringing torrentes of rain'and" some hail. The day, however, broke fine, but, the strong southerly conrtiaued, and was decidedly cold' and unpleasant. • Forecast. —Strong southerly winds prevailing.
