SAILORS' SOCIETY.
At the monthly meeting of the Sailors' Society, held at the Institute, Lyttelton, the president (Captain Marciel) occupied the chair. Twenty new members were elected. An offer from the "Navy League to arrange illustrated lectures for the sailors was accepted with thanks. . It was resolved that the annual meeting be held on March 17-., at the Institute, and the president extended an invitation for the members to meet, him at tea on that occasion. The' Rev. Edward, Mathews, general secretary of the Society in London, wrote, announcing that Mr R. A. Bearsly had been appointed general secretary for New Zealand, with a view to creating more interest in the society's work throughout the Dominion. It was resolved—"That we commend Mr Dearsly for the active interest taken in the matter of organising the work for the parent society throughout New Zealand, and that this board approves of his appointment by the parent society, and will be happy to co-operate with him." The Superintendent's report showed that over 500 seamen had made use of the facilities of the Institute during the month, while 27 officers had patronised the officers' room; 178 men had also attended the sailors' Sunday teas during the month, and the Society's Seamen's Christian Brotherhood membership has increased to 26. The hon. treasurer's report showed a credit balance at the bank of £l2 18/1.
