THE AUSTRALIANS' TOUR. POVEETY BAY v. AUSTRALIA. Press Association. GISBORNE, February 20. The Australian cricketers were accorded a civil reception this morning. The weather is fine for the match against Poverty Bay* In the match against'the Australian team Poverty Bay won the toss and batted, W. Gibson and Kahlenberg opening to Waddy and Armstrong. Kahlenberg put .up 10 in the first five minutes, and was then-taken by Cody on the boundary line off Waddy. Gart; shore went in and scored four, but soon afterwards was caught by Waddy off Armstrong. -M'Mahon and Gibson, batting carefully, kept the wickets up until the luncheon adjournment, when the score wa3 23 for two wickets. "4 Total .... ~. ~... .23 THURSDAY COMPETITION. EiaHTH SOUND STASTED. The concluding round of the Thursday cricket competition was started yesterday. At: Hagley Park the Post and Telegraph team rattled up 379 runs against. Sydenham. Bailway made 92 against Sunnyside, the latter replying with 80. In their second innings the Railway men have four* wickets down for 21 runs. Details are appended. . SYDENHAM v. .POST & TELEGRAPH - Telegraph won the toss against Sydenham, and elected to bat on an ideal wicket, which favoured the*' batsmen. Both Martin and Armstrong, the opening showed" excellent form, the former being . particularly strong on'the drive. Watts batted very aggressively for his runs. Eccleton, Mansell, and Shand also shaped well. Following are the details:- —
AN "OUTSIDE" MATCH. Teams from the Waimairi Cricket Club and the Canterbury Licensed Victuallers ' Association met in a return match at, Sydenham Park yesterday. Waimairi won by 134 (Prebble'44) to the Licensed Victuallers' 119, (Savage 31, Parson 23 not out).\Savage took six of the Waimairi wickets for 58 runs. \
