AN ISLAND SENSATION.
NEW HEBRIDES NATIVES. THIRD DEGREE METHODS. SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. By Cable. —Press Association.—Copyright. (Received February 13, 9.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, February 13. Representations concerning the illtreatment of natives, and the miscarriage of justice in the New Hebrides, are now being made to the Colonial Secretary by a number of residents, who declare that the Old .Doges of Venice star chamber methods were mild, as compared with the outrages perpetrated on the island. A copy of the correspondence has been furnished to the Association for the Protection of Native Races for consideration at a meeting to be held on Monday. r .. . It is alleged that no witnesses for the defence of the natives are j ever heard, and the accused are not allowed" to be defended by counsel, wh'ile they are unable to defend themselves owing to language difficulties. Sworn testimony has been given in regard to third degree methods, which, if correct, would cause an outcry even in China or Russia. -
