Durbar Lodgz Candidates At Ashburton Tomorrow
ARETHUSA AND FLYING CLOUD Arethusa, who claims an engagement in the Rakaia Handicap at Ashburton tomorrow; is a sister to that great pacer Wrackler. Last season the daughter of Wrack and Trix Pointer sported silk on two occasions, winning at each start. Her initial attempt was in the Selma Handicap at Ashburton on May 24, when the two-year-old won from a big field, recording 3.31 for the twelve furlongs, and returning a wonderful price. The filly next stepped out in the Sapling Stakes, run at Ashburton in June, which she won in the smart time of 3.25 3-5, establishing a record for two-year-olds over a mile and a-half. The Classic’s Favourite Arethusa is the early "favourite for this year’s Derbies, and her appearance at "Ashburton tomorrow will be of special interest in view of her classic engagements. The filly is on the small side, but this does not detract from her ability to go fast, and although she is meeting some well-performed and older rivals, the Durbar Lodge representative should prove difficult to dispose of ‘over ten furlongs. Wrackler, who has won this pacticular event two years in succession, also figures in the list, but a long way back. He will probably be given a race in view of his New Zealand Cup preparation, and while his task tomorrow savours of the impossible, it is quite on the cards that his sister will keep up the family reputation for capturing this event. Flying Cloud Don Warren also has a promising candidate engaged in the Selma Handicap, run at the same fixture. This is Flying C.oud, a filly by Wrack from Pearlchild, dam of the high-class performer, Sea Pearl. Flying Cloud had on© race last season, competing in the mile heat at Ashburton in May to finish close up to the placed division, Sodium, Harold Denver and Glenville, all of whom knocked several seconds off their handicap. After her showing a Northern spprtsman made inquiries about purchasing Flying Cloud, but the price was too big and no business resulted. If the youngster has gone along the right way in the interim she should be a big possibility in the Selma Handicap tomorrow.
