FILM RUMOUR DENIED

FOX AND J. C. WILLIAMSON

The Fox Film Corporation will not extend its activities to the control of the Regent Theatres throughout New Zealand. This announcement has been made in a cable statement by Air. Beaumont Smith, managing-director of J. C. Williamson Films (N.Z.) Ltd. which controls the chain of Regent houses throughout the Dominion. The statement denies emphatically that there is any truth in the rumour that Fox would repeat in New Zealand the move made recently in Australia. by which the corporation has extended its activities to Hoyts. The cable was received last evening by Mr. E. R. Greenfield, manager of Auckland’s Regent. Mi". Beaumont Smith is at present in Sydney and may return to Auckland shortly. “The position is that J. C. Williamson (N.Z.) Ltd. is a concern entirely seperate,” said Mr. A. It. Shepard, general manager of the company this morning. “It is owned and controlled solely by J. C. Williamson Ltd., J. C. Williamson (N.Z.) Ltd., and Air. Beaumont Smith.”

MOVE BY EXHIBITORS’ ASSOCIATION PROSPECT OF SUPPLIES It is learned from a private source, that a move is on foot by the executive cbuncil of the New Zealand Motion Picture Exhibitors’ Association to establish in the Dominion a cooperative film exchange, controlled solely by and for exhibitors. No further details are forthcoming, and the source of film supply is not mentioned, although it has been said that there is available a quantity of American film in Australia controlled by firms outside the Hays organisation. together with a number of British subjects not seen here.
