JOURNAL’S JUBILEE
“OBSERVER” ISSUES 51ST VOLUME EARLY AUCKLAND DAYS Fifty years ago there appeared in Auckland the first copy of “The Observer—An Independent Journal of Politics, Information and Society/’ Today “The New Zealand Observer— An Illustrated Journal of Interesting and Amusing Literature—smart, but not vulgar, fearless, but not offensive, independent, but not neutral, unset - tarian, but not irreligious,” is celebrating its 50tli anniversary.
A special Jubilee Number of enlarged size, packed with interesting slices of the journal’s early history, amusing cartoons, and anecdotes of Auckland in the eighties, has been issued from “The Observer’s” Wyndham Street Office. Tho number, a copy of which we have pleasure in acknowledging, is printed with the original cover, and its 36 pages are profusely illustrated. Many* of its articles are in reminiscent: v *in and will be read with lively interest, both by those whose memories carry back to early “Observer” days, and by those of a younger generation to whom intimate glimpses of Victorian Auckland are illuminating. The occasion of “The Observer's’ jubilee has not been allowed to pass without suitable acknowledgment e£ the cartoons of “Bio,” whose work has been largely responsible for the consistent success of the journal. During tho war period he achieved signal success with propaganda cartoon.*-. Samples of his work taken from numbers of today and yesterday are to be found in the jubilee Issue which, as a whole, is an attractive souvenir and a proof of “The Observer’s” continued virility'.
