AMATEUR TITLE WON BY W. E. HACKETT PRESENTATION OF PRIZES Before a large attendance which included many women, W. E. Hackett defeated 11. A. Massey in tho final of tho Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship, at Messrs. Billiards, Ltd. showrooms, last evening On behalf of Messrs. Billiards, Ltd., Mr. Cummins congratulated the players .on their excellent displavs, and presented Mr. Hackett with the Billiards, Limited Shield, which he will hold for one year, also a gold medal. Mr. Massey received the set of balls used in the games as the runner-up, while he also received a special prize for recording the highest break, 74, mado during tho tournament. Hackett, with 15 (unfinished), failed to add to his score, but at his next visit excelled in a nicely-played, allround break of 55, being unfortunate in playing with the wrong ball. He was striking well, and soon after made a splendid red bail break of 60. increasing his lead to more than 300 points. Massey settled down and ran up a break of 22. Hackett continued to score freely and retaliated with one of 29. Both players earned applause for excellent individual shots. Massey played nicely in a break of 35. A further break of 21 by Haskett made the scores 723 and 383 in his favour. Hackett was playing brilliantly, and excelled in a well-played break of 57. Massey made a determined effort to reduce the deficit, and played well in registering a break of 50. He followed this up by making.a 37 break. Hackett kept forcing the game and completed a break of 52, mostly made by top of tho table play. Hackett had a commanding lead at this stage, the scores being 883 and. 531. Each recorded a 20 break soon after. Hackett, however, had no difficulty in maintaining his lead. The players received an ovation at the conclusion. Tho final scores were:—W. E. Hackett, 1,000; breaks of 55, 60, 29, 21, 37, 52 and 20; average for two sessions, 10. H. A. Massey, 642; breaks of 22, 35, 50, 38 and 20.
