BURDEN ON HOSPITALS
T.B. PATIENTS SENT TO OTAGO ADVISED BY DOCTORS Frcss Association OAMARU, Today. The Waitaki Hospital Board decided this morning to send a remit to the next Hospital Boards’ Conference as follows:—“That T.B. patients removing from one district to another should be a charge upon the formal district.” " It was pointed out that patients coming to Oamaru from contiguous districts became a charge on the Waitaki Board after three months’ residence, and patients from farther districts became! an immediate charge. Mr. A. Mclnnes: It is high time the law was amended. Members stated that Oamaru had a largo number of T.B. patients who came there ’because the climate was good and the doctors recommended it. The district was getting an undeserved bad name owing to the number of patients, who were swelling the ranks of the sanotorium waiting-list and affecting the ratepayers. Tt was a serious matter to North Otago. Mr. J. C. Kirkness said it was rather a credit to the district. They sent there some good settlers, but the ratepayers’ burden was growing. The Central Otago boards were affected similarly.
The remit was adopted unani mously.
