TEACHERS’ TRAINING
VARSITY COUNCIL SUPPORTS PROPOSED CHANGES “BEST FEATURES OF REPORT” The changes in the system of ing teachers, proposed in the report of the Parliamentary Recess Committee, were generally approved by members of the Auckland University College Council yesterday afternoon. Discussing the proposals, Air. 11. J. D. Mahon expressed the opinior; that the present system under which students’ time was divided between the University College and the Training College, was not in the best interests of the students or education. I-Ie pointed out that the recommendations in the report were designed to obviate overlapping now in existence between the two institutions. One proposal to the effect that some of the assistants of the Training College should be transferred to the University College would have to be considered carefully, and every precaution taken to ensure that the transferees were properly qualified. Sir George Fowlds said that the proposal that the student teachers should spend? a considerable portion of their time at the University College might result in reduction of -practical training. In the opinion of Air. T. U. Wells, the recommended change would result in students spending four years in training instead of two or three. “The recommendations concerning the training of teachers are amonsr the best features of the Education Committee’s report,” stated Dr. m. i-tansiuii. Air. A. Burns said that the principal of the Training College denied that there was any overlapping in the training of teachers.
