USE OF GRAMOPHONE RESTRICTED CONFERENCE IN AUSTRALIA The use of gramophone records by A. and B. class broadcasting companies is to be restricted in Australia and New Zealand. This means that more artists will have to be employed for the daily programmes. Mr. J. S. Emanuel, managing director of the Reliance Loan Corporation, brought the above information back from Australia with him this morning on the Ulimaroa. He stated that recently he attended a conference in Sydney between the manufacturers of gramophone records and the Australian Performing Rights Association. It was decided at the conference to restrict the use of records, this restriction to apply to A. and B. class stations. He stated that more musicians and artists will have to be employed to maintain the programmes. In future the use of gramophone records will be restricted to certain numbers, each of which is to be used only a certain number of times in a certain period. Mr. Emanual expects that a similar conference to that which was held in Sydney will be held in New Zealand to decide what records are to be used and when they are to be used. “The State Governments have got to work and are co-operating with the object of bringing Australia back to prosperity,” said Mr. Emanuel in commenting on the situation in the Commonwealth. ‘‘The people are now more optimistic and realise that they will have to work and work hard.”
