AT ELLERSLIE

NO FAST TIMES RECORDED PRACTICE BARRIER USED With the going holding, and the pegs 55 feet out on the course proper, there tv ere no particularly fast times in this morning’s training operations at Ellerslie. Also available was No 3 grass, but the use of the course proper for the first time in the last few weeks ensured most of the galloping on this track. Course Proper Eager Rose has not been asked for anything of a strenuous nature, and over a circuit she hit out evenly to record 2.19. Sir Mond, Great Emblem, and Red Lion were together for a bout over five furlongs. Great Emblem moved very pleasingly ahead of Sir Mond and Red Lion, the time for the journey being 1.11. Gold Lily worked in better style than Kawainga over half a mile in 55, and New Roy accomplished a furlong farther in 1.7 1-5, doing it nicely. All Foot Rule’s speed was in evidence when she beat Land Measure from the six furlongs in 1.24 2-5. Neither could have done much better, but it was a pleasing display. Sub-Editor had to be kept going to keep on terms with Catoma over six furlongs. They ran their first two furlongs in 27 3-5, and the til'st three took 41. the whole journey taking 1.25 1-5. Catoma finished really well, and was not unduly hurried. Ruling King received a start from Gold Money, but with the best of the weights the latter had to be held in check when they left six furlongs behind in 1.29 2-5. Gold Money is working impressively at present, and her appearance at Ellerslie next month will be awaited with interest. A round was exacted from Hannibal, who commenced at a lively pace, and then at the five furlongs post was brought home by The Fox. Hannibal found his companion too fast for him in the last couple of furlongs, and was three lengths behind. However, his time, 2.15 1-5, lor the round, was impressive, and the last six furlongs were carved out in 1.27 1-5. He is a decided light-weight possibility in Saturday’s big event. Bonny Lea, a much-discussed candidate for the Avondale Stakes, disposed of three furlongs freely in 41 4-5. Operatic accompanied Wild Country in an effort over six furlongs in 1.26, but the former was hard pushed in the last furlong. Llanore and Currajong were paired over six furlongs, and keeping together returned. 1.25 1-5 for the trip. Llanore, however, was not asked a question. Bennie, Principal and Prince A mans were at intervals after going over the last six of seven furlongs in 1.27 3-5, while Gay Cockade strode over a similar distance without being timed. Tetrarchate beat Neil and Patutahi over five furlongs in 1.10, and the last three furlongs of Tambourine’s work took 46 4-5. Frothblower and Ivarangapai placed six furlongs to their credit in 1.25 3-5. with tlic former travelling the better at the end. Two-year-olds were mainly represented in the horses which took port in the four furlongs’ flutter down the back. Included among those to line up at the mile barrier were Speedfast, Herbie, Royal Gallant. Informant. Stimulant, Spring Song, Milvane. Hawthorn. Absent. United, and the Valkyrian filly in R. E. Brown’s stable. Royal Gallant began smartest and led from Informant, Stimulant (together). United, and Herbie, the first three furlongs taking 41. and the half-mile occupying 56. Number Three Grass Lady Court strode smartly for half a mile, running the last three in 38. After schooling, Diamond Queen moved to the end of a round in <1.51 1-5, while Kamehameha and a companion ran four furlongs in 55 3-5. Tui Mint and Manawhenua reeled off half a mile in 53 1-5, and were under nice restraint at the end. Diamond Queen (Butler) improved her fencing by completing two hurdles satisfactorily. An interesting bit of schooling was indulged in by Royal Day (E. Garrett), Sir Archie (D. Craddock). Quincoma (J. Sharkey), and Waltzer (R. Olivo). The quartet accomplished four hurdles safely, Quincoma setting a fast pace from Waltzer, Royal Day and Sir Archie, the last-named shaping poorly, although an improvement on recent essays. King Swift (T. Williams) jumped badly when led over four obstacles by Respirator. Importer (J. Sharkey) was indulged j in a bout over the steeplechase fences on the flat, and showed that he retains all his old ability.
