FUTURE POLICY

TOWN-PLANNING WORK FORMING OF NEW BRANCHES “We have now reached a stage when we can with advantage determine our policy in the future, and it is proposed that immediately on the termination of formal business at the general meeting we should proceed to discussion of two matters of major importance, town-planning education and legislation,” states the anual report of the Town-Planning Institute of Xew Zealand. “It is proposed to set up committees to deal with these and other problems, and the views or suggestions of members should be of the greatest value and assistance to the committees.” The annual meeting of the institute will be held at Wellington on October 29. IMPORTANT EVENT “Perhaps the most important event we have to record is the formation of strong and rapidly-growi ig branches in Auckland and Christchurch.” states the report. “As the success of the institute depends in no small degree upon the formation and activities of branches, it is to be hoped that other centres will emulate the example of Christchurch and Auckland. “There are numerous town-planning and allied associations throughout the Dominion who would be well advised to join forces with the institute. Such a step would increase rather than detract from their influence and utility in the localities in which they function.” The membership now stands at 171. 41 new members having been added since July 31. The first number of the institute’s journal, entitled “Community Planning,” had been published and issued to members. The balance sheet shows a credit of £l2B. The annual meeting will open with an official welcome by the Mayor of Wellington. After formal business and election of officers, there will be a discussion on town-planning education, led by Professor C. R. Knight. A discussion on the policy of the institute in regard to town-plarlning legislation ! will be initiated by the director of I town-planning, Mr. J. W. Mawson, sec- . retary of the institute.
