ROWING FOR WOMEN

FAIR SEX FORMS CLUB IN AUCKLAND INTEREST OF MAYORESS A meeting was held on Thursday last at the Y.W.C.A., presided over by the Mayoress, Mrs. A. D. Campbell, to consider the advisability of forming a women’s rowing club in Auckland. Tlio club was duly formed and the name Auckland Ladies’ Rowing Club was proposed and carried unanimously. The following were elected officers: President. Mrs. E. F. Brant; treasurer. Miss H. M. Thackeray; and secretary. Miss V. F. Brant. A committee of seven was also elected. The Auckland Rowing Association was represented by Mr. E. H. Buckler. Representatives from the Auckland, North Shore, St. George’s and West End Rowing Clubs were also present. Among others were Mrs. Seagar, Mrs. Andrews, Misses Bainbridge, Naill, Jackson, McConnell, Messrs. J. MacDougal. B. Rutledge, G. Barrett, S. Jinks. The convenors of the meeting. Misses IT. M. Thackeray and V. F. Brant, were members of a club in Sydney and rowed in the crew that won the junior championship four of New South Wales. 1929-30. At the conclusion of the meeting a hearty vote of thanks was tendered to Mrs. A. D. Campbell for her interest and presence. PIGEON FLYING ONEHUNGA CLUB The course chosen for the Onehunga Pigeon Club’s third race of the season on Saturday was from Paekakariki to Onehunga, an airline distance of 286 miles. Liberated in heavy rain, but with a strong following wind, the winning bird flew the distance in 6 hours 7 minutes, averaging 47 miles an hour. An exceptionally close finish was provided by the leading birds, eight of them reaching their home lofts within 40 seconds after the arrival of the winner. Results:—Mr. W. Hadwin’s Blue Sky, 1,355.8yds a minute, 1; Mr. J. Wallace’s All Red, 1,355.3yds a minute, 2; Mr. F. Glass’s Ruling King, 1,353.5yds a minute, 3. Good performances also were put up by Messrs. Prentice, Carden and Prentice’s Terrible Turk, 1.353.014yd5; Mr. B. D. Smith’s Refresher, 1,353.013yd5; Mr. T. Collins’s Free Service, 1,352yd5; Mr. W. Sargent’s Lady Emily, 1,351.8yd5; Mr. A. Langton’s Clarence, 1,351.5yd5: Mr. F. Stenning’s Gay Lady, 1,333yd5; and Messrs. F. Wilson and Son’s Joy Fiend, 1,330yd5.
