AVONDALE FIXTURE

MANY VISITING HORSES HAVE ARRIVED MEETING OPENS ON SATURDAY Last week’s arrivals at Avondale were Armenia, Lucky Alice, Lady Vane, Indolent, Black Maire and Miss Albyn, all from Te Aroha, and the Gisborne sprinter and jumper Clare more. Yesterday J. IT. Jefferd’s pair, Star Stranger and Cylinder, put in an appearance. Vandyke is expected to arrive tomorrow morning. Star Stranger, who ran a splendid race in the Marangai Handicap at Wanganui on Thursday, is engaged in the Avon- i dale Cup, and Cylinder is to meet his ■ engagement in the Avondale Guineas j next Monday. A big team is duo tomorrow, among ! them being Historic, Lineage, Panther, i Type, Make Up, Johneen and Imatea- j girl. On Wednesday it is probable that ►Silverminc, Awaken, Mend ip, Te Ati- ! ttwa, Eastertimo and Lady Quex will | show up, in addition to many others ’ from the provincial centres. Loomb’s Dozen Easily the biggest team from one j stable will be that of the Te Awamutu j trainer, E. E. Loomb. who has booked accommodation for twelve horses. Twelve months ago E. Loomb had the biggest string at the suburban course, but unfortunately he had to enter hospital when ho arrived. It is to be hoped that better luck will be with him on this occasion. The course at Avondale is in excellent order, the growth of grass being most luxuriant, and a striking testimony to the caretaker’s work. However, the going at present is soft, and at best the sting will be out of the ground. It is obvious that the course will not i suit horses that like a hard and fast ' track only. One of these is Star Stran- I ger. If further rain falls during tinnext two or thi'ee days the going is ' certain to be soft for the opening day's racing on Saturday next, when the. Avondale Jockey Club meeting opens.
