MUNICIPAL MUSIC
CHOIR, BAND AND ORGAN WEEK-END RECITALS An appreciative attendance at the , Town Hall on Saturday evening was provided with an enjoyable and interesting entertainment when a varied programme was presented by the Muni- I cipal Choir under the direction of the ; City organist, Mr. Maughan Barnett. The choir’s opening number was. “Fire, Fire My Heart,” by Morley, which was accorded good treatment. Mendelssohn's “The Nightingale” and the old Welsh air, "All Thro* the j Night,” were also well handled. Cesar 1 Franck’s beautiful arrangement of ! Psalm 150 was another enjoyable number, and McEwen’s attractive old num- I ber, “Let Mo the Canakin Clink,” was also warmly received. The choir also sang “The Homeland” (Sullivan) and i the Hampshire folk-song, “There Was a Tree.” arranged by Gustav Holst. Miss Kate Campion was heard to ! fine advantage in “Air De Adieux,” from Tschaikowsky's opera, "Jeanne , D’Arc.” As an encore number. Miss Campion sang a French love-song. “Ouvre Tes Yeux Bleu?, Ma Mignonne.” The “Jewel Song,” from Gounod’s “Faust.” and Slater’s "Buy My Roses,” were also very well received. Mr. Maughan Barnett played a number of enjoyable organ solos, including the first movement of Handel’s "Cuckoo and Nightingale Concerto,” Paderewski's "Minuet,” the finale from “Sonata de Camera,” by Peace, and Johnston’s “Evensong.” Mr. Edgar Randal played the organ accompaniments, and Mr. Leo. Whittaker was accompanist for Miss Campion. BAND CONCERT Under the baton of the acting-con-ductor, Mr. Hal C.- McLennan, the Auckland Municipal Band presented an enjoyable programme at the Town Hall last evening. The items included Schubert’s March© Militaire,” the overture "Raymond” (Thomas), a selection from Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana,” “The Red Cross” march (Panella) and Del Riego’s “Popular Songs.” During the evening Messrs. F. Bowes and J. Davies played a cornet duet, “Cheerfulness.” and a euphonium solo. “Song of the Clock” (Burchell) was i played by Mr. J. Purchase. The band i also played at the Zoological Park in | the afternoon ORGAN RECITAL A recital of sacred and classical I music was given by Mr. Maughan Bai - ! nett. City organist, in the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. The programme, which was of a high standard, included “Homage Hymn,” Rowley’s “Scherzo Caprice,” Bach’s “Andante,” variations from Beethoven. “Toccata” (Gigout), and Widor’s “Fourth Symphony” in four movements. An organ and chimes selection, “Vesper Bells.” and Rubijistein’s “Wedding March” were particularly well received.
