AMATEUR ATHLETICS
WINTER SESSION CLOSES SPORTS AT ONEHUNGA The last meeting ot the winter competition series of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club was held on Saturday afternoon. The events were run in conjunction with the annual sports on the Onehunga recreation ground. The course for the steeplechase was very short, necessitating seven laps in a mile and a-half race. Lapping the individual runners in a field of 22 was no easy task. Tne men in front at the start, Clark and McNiel. lost their chance after four laps had been covered, and. T. E. Henry, the winner, had a good run to retain the lead he claimed two laps from home. Thomas ran well for second place. Sceats, who finished third, was unlucky to stop at the last hurdle. .His delay gave Thomas an easy second place. although with another hundred 3-ards he might have headed off Henry.
H. S. Roper threw well in the discuscontest, his handicap giving him a clear margin over the second man. The best net throw went to A. Hogg with 81ft Tin. The shot-put cup went to A. Elliot, and T. Elliot, senr.. came to light with the second best put. The sprint was run on fairly heavy and rather uneven ground. There were four small heats and a final. The first and second only of each heat were finalists. H. McNiel won the event in easy style. He was first in his heat, and ran well both times.
