CHAIN OF AIRDROMES
KING COUNTRY SCHEME FINANCED BY ART UNION From Our Own Correspondent TAUMARUNUI, Thursday. What is possibly the most ambitious aviation project so far dealt with in this country was considered by the Chamber of Commerce at its monthly meeting last evening. The plan was revealed in a letter to the Mayor (Mr. I C. A. Boles) from Mr. H. T. Morton, of Te Kuiti, who is seeking the views j of prominent King Country citizens in ; regard to establishing a chain of air- J dromes through the centre of the j North Island. Landing grounds are proposed at Te Kuiti, Pio Pio, Tauraarunui and Ohakune. Mr. Morton intimated that application had been made to the Minister of Internal Affairs for permission to conduct, an art union to assist with the financing of the scheme, and it was anticipated this would be granted in two or three months’ time. The chamber’s president, Mr. A. S. j Laird, said that he thought a pro- i gressive community should support \ any sound scheme. Mr. D. IT. Hall, of Taumarunui Air-! ways, Limited, explained the aviation I position, and intimated that at pres- I ent airdromes, such as those proposed. would be of no commercial use. though it might be wise to procure the necessary land before the prices rose. He considered that very full information should be procured as to whether the grounds would be used for club flying or in connection with the Government commercial services. All details of the proposal should be secured. The meeting carried a resolution to that effect.
