MAN AND CHILD KILLED
MOTOR CAPSIZES ON HILL THREE OTHERS ESCAPE Special to THE SUX PALMERSTON N., Thursday. A well-known Palmerston North resident and an infant were killed this afternoon when a car overturned near Awahuri and was completely wrecked. Other passengers, two women and a man, had a miraculous escape from death. The dead are Henry Herbert Griggs, an undertaker, aged 56 years, of 15 Princess Street, and the 12-months-old sen of Mr. Roy A. 3race, secretary of the Premier Drapery Company, 263 Park Road. Injured is Mrs. Brace, Mr. Griggs’s daughter, and mother of the baby, who is suffering from severe bruises and abrasions. The other occupants of the car were Mrs. Latty, of Levin; and Mr. W. H. Williams. aged 50 years, a retired civil servant, for many years supervisor at the Palmerston North Post Office. The accident occurred at the foot of Mount Stewart, at about 5 p.m. The party was returning from Wanganui, and Mr. Griggs was driving. Approaching a slight incline two cars i travelling in opposite directions were passed. Apparently Mr. Griggs went | too far over to his left to let these cars pass, and in trying to recover ! he jammed on both his foot-brakes ; and bis hand-brake. This sudden cheek, combined with the angle of the | car on the road (two of the back | wheels were apparently off the bitumen), together with the speed at i which it was travelling, was disasI trous. With the wheels locked the heavysedan hurled down the incline, overturning several times, and what i wreckage was left came to rest facing in the opposite direction to that in j which the car had been travelling. 1 Tho car was literally smashed L» ! matchwood.
