TRANSPORT TO SUBURBS
BETTER FACILITIES SOUGHT MOTOR TRANSPORT CRITICISED A long discussion ensued at last evening’s meeting of the Otahuhu Borough Council regarding the necessity of making representations to the Railway Department to improve the facilities for suburban passenger traffic. Mesrs. Pearce, Betrie,. and Hunter were appointed to wait on the department to provide better services for suburban passengers. Mr. C. R. Petrie, .who introduced the subject, said that a shed for bicycles j and an overhead bridge for pedesj trian traffic at the station would be ! great conveniences. He said when I the new Auckland station was eomI pleted, a quicker service was pro- ; mised. The district wanted the rail- ! way traffic as well as the road traffic. If the Railway Department was not j prepared to meet the council’s demands, ho suggested that the council j point out to the Auckland Tran: j Board the advisability of granting an- | other company permission to run a j passenger service to Otahuhu, in opposition to the company at present operating. He said the present company | hacl a monopoly of the whole district, j An opposition service ran through the | district, and was willing to pick | passengers at a cheaper rate than at ■ present operating, but under the ’ present agreement it was barred, i Mr. Hunter expressed the opinion j that the delegation recommend to the j Railway Department the advisability i of instituting a feeder bus service to | the railway station.
