In the Market Place

DEARER BANANAS STOCKS RIPEN SLOWLY Prices of ripe repacked bananas rose sharply in the city markets this morning, and will be high for more than a week. The latest supply from the Islands came in a very green condition, and the fruit ripened but slowly during the past few days. It is expected that only a small quantity will be ready daily until a new shipment arrives. There was the usual small demand for apples, prices remaining about the same as for weeks past. Many Delicious varieties are in a wastey condition, and soli according to quality. Thu market was slightly better for Sturmers and fur Grannie Smith varieties at the prices quoted. Stocks held here of Coles pears were almost ended, but there was still a fair quantity of Nelis and I*. Barrys, the former bringing good rates. Lemons were still dull of sale, and there was little demand for Poorman oranges. Some lines of oranges in the Cook Island shipment this week were in very poor condition, and losses will be large. Californian grapes were slow of sale. There will be a further shipment of citrtis fruits from Australia next week, sufficient supplies still being on hand to hold the market until then.

Tlio cold snap lias decreased considerably the supply of cauliflowers, and prices this morning were much higher, but if the present rain continues without further cold there will be plentiful supplies again within u week or so. Lettuces and cabbages were affected but little. There were largo supplies of new potatoes coining forward, including consignments from Norfolk Island. Pumpkins were shorter in supply. A good supply of poultry met with a keen demand, with prices firm. Cockerels were in limited supply, and choice birds took a sharp rise in values. Hens of all breeds sold strongly, with prices on a par with last week’s quotations. Ducks remained unchanged. Day-old chicks were plentiful, but after small buyers finished operating prices fell considerably for any quantities.
