FALSE PRETENCES
YOUNG SALESMAN CHARGED ADMITTED TO PROBATION On 11 charges of obtaining money by false pretences, Augustus Samuel Hodgson appeared before Mr. E. C Cutten, S.M., at the Police Court today. He was admitted to probation for 12 months and restitution of £lO was ordered. Hodgson, a salesman, aged 22, pleaded guilty through Mr. Snedden to three charges of obtaining sums totalling £lO from Otto J. Thedens, by false pretences. The remaining eight charges were withdrawn. According to Chief-Detective Hammond. Hodgson had been employed by Mr. Thedens as a canvasser for veterinary medicines. He was on commission and was selling cases of cattle drenches containing 12 tins each. His method was to persuade storekeepers to buy 12 tins, and then put the order through as 12 cases and collect the larger commission. Mr. Snedden admitted the facts, but. contended that if his client had set out to defraud his employer deliberately, he would have adopted a more business-like method. Mr. A. J. Campbell, probation officer, said that accused was worthy of a chance. He bad not been before the court before on criminal charges.
