SAVING A BEACH

WATERFRONT ROAD AT KOHIMARAMA NEGOTIATIONS GOING ON The City Council was to have met this morning to decide the question whether the Waterfront Hoad shall be taken over the sands at Kohimarama or be carried further in toward the land, but negotiations with property owners have not yet been completed, and the meeting has been postponed until today week. The City Engineer, Mr. J. Tyler, the Town Clerk, Mr. J. S. Brigham, and the chairman of the Works Committee, Mr. J. Dempsey, have been in negotiation with the 11 owners of property fronting the beach between Gray's Hall and Averili Avenue. The original proposal of the Works’ Committee was that the road should be constructed across the sand. This brought a storm of protest from residents of St. Heliers and Kohimarama, and the council deferred action. A meeting was then held on the beach, and residents made a plea that the beach be saved. They suggested that the road be set back about 70 feet, but this would necessitate the acquisition of property fronting the beach. Owners were asked to meet the council with a view to an agreement. During the last three weeks conversations have been carried on. but It Is understood that finality has not yet been reached.
