AUCKLAND’S QUIET SEASON This has been probably the least eventful hockey season in Auckland for several winters. There has been no team entered for the Dominion Challenge Shield and no Town v. Country game. Waikato is sending an eleven to Auckland on August 23 for a friendly game, no trophy depending on the result. Mount Eden is dispatching a senior and a junior team to Thames on the same day. Tho Devonport Shield competition of one round begins on August 23, at the conclusion of the present senior men’s competition. Last season the shield went to Mount Eden. The Ivont Cup match, played between the winner of the tdub competition and the Devonport Shield series, was retained by Somerville, which has kept the trophy since it was first given, seven years ago. It seems that the Whites will havo to relinquish its hold this year. All junior grade teams are beginning the various knock-out competitions as soon as the club competitions have terminated.

Mr. E. J Hewitt has been unlucky in bis examinations for the New Zealand Referees’ Association’s first-class pass, having been dtmied a certificate for practical refereeing because of some muddling by the association. That body stipulates that a candidate must sit for this theory examination before ho is examined on the practical side. The association has arranged Mr. Hewitt’s theory test for July 2, but for some reason or other the examination was postponed. The practical

examination was held on July 5 and Mr. Hewitt was passed, and the theory examination held later. Now the association says that Air. Hewitt’s practical pass is null and void. This seems a strange attitude for a responsible authority. The proper course, it would appear, is for the association to withhold Mr. Hewitt's practical pass until it is learned whether he has passed the theory test. If he has, then there should be no quibble about granting a full ticket, when the deadlock is the fault of the association alone.
