GUARANTEE WANTED

BUILDING OF MILFORD MARINE PARK COUNCIL AND COMPANY Before the Takapuna Borough Council proceeds further with the scheme for a marine park on the Wairau Estuary at Milford, it will require a guarantee from the North Shore Transport Company and Milford Amusements, Ltd., which are the companies chiefly interested, that the council will not be expected to pay any sum other than that already promised. The private companies will bo required to complete the work themselves should the estimated expenditure of £5,000 be exceeded. Tho question was raised by Air. J. Guiniven, who asked for information concerning progress of the scheme. The Alayor, Air. J. W. Williamson, said that the Public Works Department required full plans of the scheme before it would agree to a £2 for £1 subsidy being given. These plans would cost £2O, of which interested companies would pay half the cost. On the score of finance, and fearing that the natural boat harbour of the estuary would be destroyed, Mr. Guiniven suggested that the scheme be dropped. It would be better to dredge out the estuary and form.fairly deep water instead of mud flats at low tide. NOW FAVOUR SCHEME Air. J. A. Algie pointed out that boatowners were now in favour of the scheme. It would be foolish to refuse tho opportunity of securing a largo sum for expenditure on labour at very little cost. That the cost would mount up little by little was expressed by Mr. J. Collins. This had happened in nearly every municipal undertaking. Some years ago a Royal Commission had inquired into a proposal to build a bridge aeross the Wairau Estuary, and Air. Guiniven considered that the report presented had laid it down that the area should be kept for a boat harbour. After further discussion it was decided that the North Shore Transport Company and subsidiary companies be asked what total amount thev would be willing to pay. / The legal and finance committee will report on the finding of the Royal Commission regarding the estuary.
