RECENT BURGLARIES CLEARED UP PLEADS GUILTY The explanation of several recent burglaries appeared in the Police Court this morning, when William Ms'thews. a Maori labourer, ageu 26, pleaded guilty before Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., to seven charges of breaking and entering. He was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. Matthews was charged with breaking and entering Caddy Bros.’ butcher's shop. Grey Lynn, on July 21, and stealing lilb of sausages and two keys, valued at ss; with breaking and entering the Mount Roskill Road Board office on July 12 and stealing four motor-driver licences; with breaking and entering R. W. Gallagher's shop in Victoria Street on July 17 and stealing 10s; with breaking anci entering the dwelling of Arthur Sydney Watkins, intending to commit a crime, and with stealing a schoolbag valued at 15s from the dwelling of William Thomas Lemon, West End Road —both these offences occurred on July 21; with breaking and entering Marriott's, Ltd., Parnell Road, on July 23 and stealing a packet of cigarettes, valued at Sd; with breaking and entering the premises of U. Gabriel and Sous ou July 27, and stealing a receipt hook, two stamps and 4d in cash—valued in all at Is. OFFICE LOCKED Joseph Warren, a clerk in the employ o£ the Mount Roskill Road Board, said he had locked the office up carefully on Saturday, July 12. On Monday he found it had been entered. Six motor-driver licenses and 4s 6d in cash had been taken. One of the side windows of the office had been forced with a blunt instrument. Evidence was given by John Henry Gallagher, a storekeeper in Victoria Street. He discovered on July IS that his cash register had been interfered with. Only 10s in change was taken. A window and a door had been forced. After similar evidence had been given by other witnesses, ActingDetective Kempt said he had questioned Matthews on July 30. At first Matthews had denied the charge. Later he admitted it. The two keys were found with him and the motor licences were in his rodrn. The schoolbag was found on a launcn where accused said he had left it.
