A HERO OF THE WAR
“OLD BILL” RECOVERS
“Old Bill,, M.P.,” is recovering from an illness which once threatened to end his career. The man who created the part of Old Bill, M.P.. in Bruce Bairnsfather’s war comedy of that name is Johnny Danvers, now aged 70. He was waiting for the brokers in his meagre home at Deptford when there came a well-known voice from the passage. “Why, bless my soul, we can’t have our dear old Johnny like this.” It was George Graves, and through him Johnny now lives happily with his devoted wife in Brixton. Mr. Graves organised a fund to which he himself, with Messrs. Bransby Williams and C. B. Cochran, became chief donors, later assisted by the Variety Artists’ Fund. Though for the time being the old actor is crippled and in constant pain, he hopes to make a “come-back” in one of next winter’s pantomimes.
