In the Market Place
OVERSEAS SHIPMENTS AMERICAN ONIONS SOON A few American onions are already offering at the City Market auctions, but regular supplies from Canada and the United States will not be arriving in Auckland for two or three weeks. A small shipment of Californian plums and apricots which were offered on Saturday had arrived m a very poor condition and were sold much below cost. There will be no boat from Sydney this week, the mandarins now being offered being from cold storage. Yesterday the Tofua brought in 6,000 cases of bananas, which brought up to 22s Gd a case for green fruit at this morning’s auction, and other bananas showed an improvement in prices. There was a fair demand for oranges, but small poormans found no market. Apples and pears were very depressed. Celery is proving a glut at the City Markets, and cabbage, cauliflower and lettuce are also in over-supply. A good supply of new potatoes and of vegetables in season met with a good demand.
