Phar Lap’s Sister Goes To Australia

HUNTING CRY TOO J. M. CAMERON TRIPS AGAIN J. M. Cameron leaves for Australia from Wellington on Friday, of next week, with Hunting Cry. Nae Lap, and his own filly by Chief Ruler from Egyptian Flower, records the ’‘Tribune.” Before the date of sailing one or two more may be added to this trio. The Chief Ruler filly is well forward for one of her age, and although none of the rising, two-year-olds has vet been galloped, this filly has clearly demonstrated that she can gallop very fast and many predict her to be one of the season’s best youngsters. She is engaged in the Australian early classics. Best Three-Year-Old Hunting Cry is in great order, and one or two of his gallops have been exceedingly smart, although over short courses. He has no direct mission, but more than likely he will bo reserved for handicap events, such as the Epsom, etc., as the weiglit-for-age horses that will be seen across the Tasman this spring are the very best seen out for many seasons. Nae Lap, the sister to Phar Lap, goes over publicly untried. In her private work she goes fast, but as yet does not stand up to galloping too well. No doubt her appearance over the # other side will be well watched.

OUT OF BIG HURDLES

ABERFELDY’S PROGRAMME GALA DAY SCHOOLED Gala Hay, with I. Tilson in the saddle, jumped two hurdles in lino style at Riccarton yesterday. Aberfeldy, who was scratched for the Grand National Hurdles at 2.45 p.m. yesterday, is an unlikely starter over hurdles at the National meeting. Ho will again contest the Jumpers’ Flat Handicap on the opening day, an event he won 12 months ago.

Avondale Club’s New Programme

PLEASING FEATURES FEWER MILE RACES As forecast by the president at its annual meeting recently, there are two new races figuring on the new season’s programme of the Avondale Jockey Club. The stake money for the four days’ racing in the 1930-31 season is £10,400. the same as for the present season. Tlio two iixtui-es are the spring meeting on September 20 and 22, and the autumn meeting on April 11 and 15. The amounts in stake money for these two gatherings are £5,740 and £4,660. Of course, the big event of the season is the Avondale Cup, of £9OO. 1} miles, while the three classic races —Avondal© Stakes, Avondale Guineas and the All-Aged Stakes —are each endowed to the extent of £SOO. Champion Hack Plate The most interesting feature of the new season’s programme is tho introduction of two new races. The first of these is the Champion Hack Plate, a £3OO event, run over the handy distance of seven furlongs, run on the first day of the spring carnival. The winner takes £2OO. plus a sweepstake of £5 each for starters, payable at the post. This should bring the winner’s share up to the best part of £3oo—a nice hack prize. It is very probable that classic candidates still in the hack class will be seen out in this race as a preliminary run to the Guineas two days later. Tho Te Aroha J.C. has a couple of sweepstake races on its annual proytamme, and their success year after year is sufficient evidence as to their popularity. Set weights have been provided for in the Champion Hack Plate, as fol-low':—Three-year-olds 7.12, four-year-olds and upward 8.9, maiden of those ages being allowed 71b and 101 b respectively. It is interesting to see that in this event three-year-olds are to carry weiglit-for-age, whereas the four-year-olds come down 51b on the scale. For Two-year-olds Tho other new race Is that on the opening day of the autumn fixture. Hitherto the two-year-olds, to get a race on that had, had to be eligible for the All-aged Stakes, in which they, met the best performers of the season. So as to cater for the tw'o-year-olds on tho first day of this fixture the Oakley Handicap has been set aside for them. This is a race of £225, worth £l7O to the winner, run over six furlongs. This move, too, should be a success. One Mile Races One of the best moves the club has undertaken in tho reduction of the mile races, the barrier for these events being most awkwardly situated. Last April the Oakley Handicap was one of these, but that is now become a six-furloncs contest for the babies Then the big race on the second day, the Autumn Handicap, has been decided over the mile course in the past, but next April that distance has been altered to a mile and a-quurter. This is a bold move in the right direction. Spring Fixture The club’s spring meeting is fast approaching, the opening being set down for September 20, which is only eight weeks ahead. Entries for this meeting are due on August 29, and at tho same time final payments for the two classic races (Avondale Stakes, first day, and Avondale Guineas, second day) must also be made. The programmes for the forthcoming meetings at the suburban course are such as to commend themselves to owners. Details of these are as follow: SPRING MEETING First Day—Saturday, September 20 MAIDEN PLATE, of £2OO (winner to receive £l5O, seven furlongs. For uon-winners at time of starting.
