SCHOOL BADLY DAMAGED
FOUR CLASSROOMS GUTTED Press Association NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday. Damage estimated at about £1,300 was done to the Central School, New Plymouth, today by a lire which broke out about 6 p.m. The origin was apparently jn a defective cnimney in one of the classrooms. The flames spread rapidly through the rafters and it was two hours before the outbreak was subdued, owing to the great difficulty in getting at the seat of the flames. Four classrooms were practically gutted and water and smoke caused considerable damage to books and fittings. The school is a large one. accommodating nearly 600 pupils. It is built of wood and is very old. The Education Department carries its own lire risk.
