BRIGHT BOXING
AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIPS PRELIMINARY BOUT RESULTS The preliminary bouts of the Auckland amateur championships in the Town Hall last evening, produced some good boxing. The contestants were exceptional ly wellmatched for a tournament of this nature and some close contests were seen. The sensation of the evening was the disqualification of Harry Johns, feather-weight champion of New Zealand. Twice did Air. R. Meale, the referee, warn him for illegal hitting, and when he offended a third time ho was ordered to his corner, and the bout awarded to his opponent. Johns's open glove and inside glove hitting has been the subject of adverse comment on many occasions, especially in the Auckland championships last year, when he did not win a single bout, but, nevertheless, was awarded decisions. Last evening's disqualification should cause Johns, who has the makings of a good boxer, if given correct tuition, to mend his hitting ways. Illegal hitting does not always pay. Air. Meale’s action deserves commendation.
As usual, the feather and lightweight classes provided the best contests of the evening. The best bout was that between Bob Purdie, bantamweight champion of New Zealand, and C. Alanson. The end of two rounds found honours even, and in the final session Purdie had to fight at his best to defeat the aggressive Alanson. Two hard fights were outstanding in the light-weight class. Brentnall met a tough one in Keenan who, after being dropped twice in the first round, fought all in the way in the second only to be stopped in the last term. Alartin and Fletcher fought the most grueiling battle of the programme. Both took heavy punishment and shed plenty of each other’s blood. Only three of last year's champions defended their titles, Johns (feather), O. AlcKnight (welter), and P. AlcCarthny (heavy). F. Pearcey (fly), is now domiciled in the South, R. Purdie (bantam) has moved up to the next division, C. Craig (light), was unable to attend from tlio Waikato, M. O’Brien (middle) is a professional, and McCarthny (light-heavy) has outgrown the class. Air. R. Afeale and Air. AT. AfcLean were the referees. The semi-finals and finals will be held on Alonduy evening. Results are as follow: FEATHER-WEIGHT sc:?' f!? 16 ’ I? 1 91b - outclassed C. Fahey.
