SHIPS’ FIGUREHEADS
“FIELD OF MEMORIES” AT DEVONPORT RELIC FROM BARQUE REWA Tho “Field of Memories,” at Devonport Naval Base, planned by Commander Nelson Clover, naval officer commanding the base, is being rapidly filled up. Commencing 18 months ago with one ship’s figurehead, and a piece of armour from H.M.S. New Zealand, the collection now comprises eight figureheads, in addition to other reliqs of ships that have passed into memory. The latest addition is the figurehead of the barque Rewa, which lias been very deftly reconditioned and will be mounted next week. Tho -Museum authorities have expressed sympathy with the idea of a collection of nautical relics at the naval base, and have handed over the figurehead of the Wellington, a boat that was the mainstay of tho Northern Coy.’s Whangarei service in pre-railway days. The figurehead represents the Duke who clashed forces with Napoleon,. It is hoped also that the figureheads of the warships Wolverine and Virago, now in the Museum, will ultimately join the naval base collection. A resident of Dargaville, who has already given one figurehead, that of the brigantine Eliza Firth, is sending another that he has owned for years.
