OPERATION AT SEA
STEWARD ON BOARD PORT BOWEN OFFICERS ASSIST An operation for appendicitis was performed on a steward on the Port Bowen by Dr. C. E. Duffett, of Guv’s Hospital, London. Although the dining saloon had to be used as an operating theatre and the necessary instruments were not all available, the operation was a complete success. Some of the officers of the Port Bowen assisted Dr. Duffett. One of the stewards, Mr. F. Childs, was taken ill after leaving Panama. He became worse and his illness wa; diagnosed as appendicitis. On July 15 the pain was so intense that the doctor decided to operate. This w s successfully accomplished and on arrival ai Auckland the patient was progressing favourably. Fortunately the weather was fine at the time and »he operating table was steady The Por Bowen. which reached Auckland this morning at daybreak from Liverpool, had an neventful voyage.
