AWAPUNI JOTTINGS
TRIALS FOR NEXT WEEK’S RACING INTERESTING TRY-OUTS Special to THE SUN PALMERSTON N., Friday. The rains and frosts experienced in the earlier portion of the week restricted the activities of trainers at Awapuni, and it was not till yesterday morning that it was possible to attempt fast work. Although the tracks were still on the heavy side, a number of candidates for the local fixture galloped on the course proper, the flags being wide out. Archeria and Poppy Lay, tvfo Kiwitea Hunters’ Hurdles candidates, were the first to figure. Jumping off at the six furlong post, they negotiated the last five furlongs in 1.12 1-5, Archei'ia going the better at the finish. Gran Chaco, who claims an engagement in the Oroua Plate, had Callamart as a partner over six furlongs, which was left behind in 1.31 2-5. Both had substantial weigths in the saddle, and it was evident that Gran Chaco could have done much better. Callamart does not come in till the second day of the local fixture. Desert Lad, who will contest the Rangiotu Handicap on the second day, ran home from the five furlong post unaccompanied in 1.11 4-5. AYhile he has his winter coat on still, the Acre gelding is now looking more like his old self. Winter Cup Candidate Otairi and Brilliant Light were associated in a gallop over six furlongs. After running the first furlong in 13 4-5 and the first three in 41 3-5, they completed their task in 1.25. Brilliant Light is this centre’s sole representative in the Clifford Handicap, for Otairi figures in the Stewards’. The Paper Money gelding is due to figure at Riccarton in the Winter Cup, and he should be in good order by that time. Llyn Du and Warzone jumped off at the seven furlongs post, to run the full distance in 1.40. Llyn Du drew away in the run down the straight to win comfortably. The Ivilbroney gelding may return to the hurdling branch at the local fixture. Warzone, who looks an improved mare, figures in the Broadway Handicap on the opening day. Evening Hero and Mandate, two prospective jumping candidates at next week’s fixture, covered six furlongs in 1.30 2-5. Mandate, who remained here after the point-to-point steeplechase at To Matai, is being worked by S. Watson. Fair Performances Potoaform recorded a very fair performance by running home from the five furlongs post in 1.10, the best effort of the morning over the distance until Moutoa Treasury made her appearance in the closing stages of the morning’s activities, to run the distance In 1.9. Both figure in the Manawatu Stewards’ Handicap next week. Glenrossie, who will probably essay the open sprint company at Awapuni next week, ran home from livefurlong post in 1.11 1-5, after leaving the first two furlongs behind in 29 4-5. Skyrider and Fiery Comet were partners over six furlongs, which were left behind in 1.28. The former will contest the Awapuni Steeples on Thursday, while Fiery Comet figures in. the Rongotea Hurdles. The Juveniles Prime Moutoa (Shambles —Moutoa’s Gift), Great Lady, Lady Alophen, and Acco (Acre—Kinsem) were associated In a gallop over half a mils, run in 53. Prime Moutoa was smartest to find his feet, but Great Lady got on terms on the post, with Lady Alophen next. Prime Moutoa and Acco will not come in till the second day, but Great Lady figures in the Oroua I*late field. Coon Song, who bears a very healthy appearance, jumped off at the sixfurlong post, but after running the first furlong in 13 3-5 he was eased up over the concluding stages, and was only cantering at the post. With a set scale of weights in the Oroua Plate, the Hunting Song gelding reads particularly well in, the conditions of the race not debarring him, although ho struck form at Trentham in no uncertain fashion. Corneroff. Magic Land, and Blacksmith jumped off at the six-furlong post. The last-named was kept under restraint in the early stages, and he dropped back in the straight, the other pair going on to complete their task in 1.30. Corneroff will run in the Hunt Cup, Blacksmith in the Kiwttea Hurdles, and Magic Land in the Broadway Handicap. The Jumpers There was very litle jumping attempted yesterday morning, Powbiri giving quite a good display over a couple of rounds of the steeplechase fences, while Dobbin did a round over the battens. A youngster who was a visitor to Awapuni for the first occasion yesterday morning was a two-year-old by the English imported sire Sky Blue from fcartosta, by Sarto Ventosa. Mistral was a full-sister to Euroclydon, and at the stud produced, in addition to Ventosa, such performers at Pampero, Mist (dam of Vladimir). Wepener (dam of Sir Solo), and Brisa (dam of Appolodorus and that good hurdler Andrea). The newcomer to the local ranks Is of a good type, and well mannered Peculiarly enough, Skylike, the dam of one of G. W. New’s Topgallant y ? u i?, e ’ sters ’ is Skyrocket, the sire of Sky Blue.
