ROTORUA LAKE FRONT
OPPOSITION TO BUILDING DEPUTATION TO COUNCIL From Our Oxen Correspondent ROTORUA, Friday. The Rotorua Borough Council is considering leasing, or even selling, for building allotments, portion of the lake front, and residents are up in arms. At this week’s meeting of the Borough Council a deputation, headed by Mr. W. A. Carter, waited upon the council to protest against the proposed action. They appealed upon the following grounds:—That such steps should only be taken on a vote of the people; that the policy was a shortsighted one; that present areas (such as the Kuirau reserve) cannot meet future requirements; that the lake front is the most popular of all the Rotorua reserves; that building on the lake front would obstruct the view from the northern entrances to the town; and that if public gardens were substituted for buildings the area would become an attractive gateway to the town. The deputation was assured by the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, that the points raised would be carefully considered. The proposals were only tentative, he said. At an opportune time the whole project would be put before the ratepayers. . _
