AUCKLAND ARTIST PRAISED

EXHIBITION IN LONDON WORK OF THE MODERNS The young Auckland artist, James Boswell, is attracting the notice of the London critics by the rare quality of his work. Recently, the Young Painters’ Society, which contains most of the advanced thoughtful artists of England today, held an exhibition at the New Burlington Galleries. “The Times’’ critic wrote of the exhibition: “Two

things strike one at once—the number of good paint ings under unfamiliar names and the high quality of the sculpture.” ‘‘H a m p s t e ad Heath,” Mr. Bos well’s picture, was acclaimed by the critics as a welcome discovery. This, in an exhibition which contained pictures by P. Wilson Steer and W. R. Sickert, is high praise indeed. The “Morning Post” critic described Mr. Boswell’s picture as “an exhilirating piece of work.” In a letter to his parents in Auckland Mr. Boswell said that there was a definite desire on the part of the younger painters in England today to revert to the English tradition and to shake off the influence which had crept in from the Continent. Mr. F. J. Porter, another Aucklander who has attained success in England, was represented at the exhibition. Of his picture, “Garden in Snow,” the “Daily Telegraph” critic said: “It has that luminosity which one occasionally misses in the work of his colleagues.” Mr. Porter, by ,he way, is one of the leading figures of the London group, now one of the strongest influences in art in England.
