Exercises For Shapely Shoulders
Fashions have changed. We must no longer be boyish in appearance. We are to have slender waists and sloping shoulders—so they say! In any case, it behoves us to pay attention to our shoulders, for they will be in evidence when we are dressed for the evening.
The neck and shoulders may quite easily be developed and kept shapely, provided a few simple but effective exercises are performed regularly every morning and evening. (1) Stand erect, rotate the- bead as far as possible, alternately to the right and left, resisting by tensing the muscles of the neck. This and all the other exercises should be repeated until a very slight fatigue is felt. (2) With the body erect, and facing straight In front, bend the head well down over the right and left shoulders alternately. At all times hold the chin comfortably back. The most shapely neck becomes ugly when the chin is allowed to poke forward. Stand erect, bend the head far back, and then right forward on the chest, taking care to keep the chin drawn in with the forward movement. Repeat until slightly tired. For angular shoulders and to fill up hollows, a very effective exercise is arm-circling. Stand erect, with the chin held in, and the arms at the sides. Raise the arms in front of the body, above the head, and, pressing them back and down, return to the starting position. This should be repeated to 25 to 50 times. Breathe deeply the while.
A NOVEL PRUNE SWEET Ingredients: Half a lb. of pruues, 2oz. almonds, a little cinnamon, 1 egg, milk, flour, chocolate, sugar. Soak the prunes, wash them and boil them slowly. They must on no account become mushy—only just soft. Drain well, cool and remove the stones. Scald and blanch the almonds and put an almond into each prune In place of the stone: sprinkle with a little cinnamon and roll the prune over the filling. Beat up the egg, add milk and flour to make a stiff batter. Coat each prune thickly with this and fry in hot fat till nicely browned. Drain thoroughly. Have the chocolate grated and mixed with sugar, and coat, the dressed prunes in this as thickly as desired. Stick a blanched almond into each and serve with sweet biscuits.
