DAY OF MEMORIES
AUCKLAND RUGBY REPS REUNITED QUARTET OF OF 1888 Today is a day of memories for several of Auckland’s oldest Rugby representatives —men who had the honour to play and officiate for this province against the first British team that visited New Zealand in 1888. Witnessing the clash between Britain and Auckland at Eden Park this afternoon, a quartet will see in retrospect its part in the Blue and White’s victory 42 years ago, by four points to nil, over the British tourists —the only win which Auckland had in the four matches that Auckland played against the visitors. Outstanding members of the quartet will be Tim O’Connor, who captained the Auckland team on that historic occasion. He will be prominent in the grandstand. Another old representative, who was a member of the Auckland fifteen in that game, will play his part today as one of the gatekeepers at the Park. He is Mick Keefe. Tom Macky, who refereed the 1888 match, and J. Arneill. president of the Auckland Union, who was one line umpire, are the other members of the quartet.
